Introduction

Our Lime Rendering & Plastering course will give contractors, specifiers and homeowners practical hands-on experience of the techniques and skills employed when using lime mortars.

This one-day course is led by Alister Polhill who has many years of experience in all aspects of traditional building. The day is suitable for all abilities and covers all aspects of the use of lime, from the history to getting hands on with the tools.

Course Overview

Meet from 9:00 for coffee, and then starting at 9:30 with introductions and a little bit of Health and Safety!
(Theory) 1 hr
The lime cycle, types of lime and their uses
History of lime
Making lime mortars, sands and binders (include slaking/hot lime)
Types of lime, air lime vs NHL, proprietary mixes, insulating limes
Why we use lime with examples
Tools for plastering
(Practical) 2 hrs
Mixing mortars, recognising correct consistency
Laying on techniques, tips and tricks
Lime rendering onto solid walls
(LUNCH) ½ hr
(Practical) 2 hrs
Lime rendering onto lath
Lime Plastering
Lime plastering onto wood wool boards and insulation boards
Discussion/ Q&A ½ hr
